Member of the Month – Melissa Thomas

Melissa joined The Chatham Club 17 years ago.  She made her way to the club through the recommendation of her doctor.  At the time, Melissa was recovering from having meniscus surgery and was also looking to lose some weight as well.  Thankfully for her and for us, her doctor suggested visiting The Chatham Club.  She came in and joined and her results have been outstanding.

Things took a turn for her almost a year ago, when last June, she found out she had kidney disease, which had an adverse effect on her blood pressure.  A double whammy.  Rather than getting discouraged, it motivated her to make even more changes in her routine and lifestyle to help keep her strong and fit.  All those changes and extra steps have her feeling great and have greatly improved both her blood pressure and kidney function.

What do you like most about having a personal trainer?

I began Training with Carmine a few years ago and it’s just what I needed.  He is an amazing teacher of exercise.  He’s motivating, inspirational, and keeps me focused in the gym!  He reminds me to block out the outside noise and be in the moment in the gym which keeps me right.  He doesn’t let me slack off, which I like.  It’s been a great adventure!

What do you like most about the Club?

I love the people here!  Not only are the staff and members very friendly, but they are also very motivating and inspiring as well.  Any time I need a pick me up, there are here for me.  It’s a great atmosphere and I love all the encouragement!

What are some of your favorite exercises?

I love doing Barbell Back Squats!  I pretty much like working my lower body best and the squats are my favorite.

What are some of your least favorite exercises?

I don’t really have any I would say that I don’t like.  I’m blessed to be able to do what I can and enjoy it all.

What do you enjoy doing outside of the club?

I love riding horses, visiting my son at USC, and watching my daughter swim at her meets.  I love going to dinner with my husband and going to musical events.  Music is a great escape for me.

Any upcoming goals?

First and foremost, I want to continue my journey for longevity while dealing with my kidney and blood pressure issues.  I want my story to be inspiring to others who are facing similar challenges.  Be proactive and make positive changes to keep your life going to its fullest.  Aside from that, I want to continue riding horses and I’d like to take up Yoga on a more regular basis.

Melissa, you have made some amazing changes and progress along your journey.  We a proud of you and proud to be part of your successful adventure.  We hope others take inspiration from your story as well.  Keep up the great work! You got this!
