All month long, we’ve been honoring Chatham Club friendships by offering a FREE #TCC sweatshirt to any member that refers a friend! Working out with a friend is a great way to add fun, accountability and spirit to your exercise regimen! We’d like to give a special shoutout to Danielle and Carol – they work out together with our personal trainer, Dennis! Check out their sage advice about working out together, below!
Q: Why does working out with a friend make working out more fun?
CAROL: Working out with a friend is fun and very rewarding. It holds me accountable, especially on those days were the gym is the last thing I want to do. That little headache that was holding me back seems to go away after about 10 minutes in the gym. Danielle is stronger than me so my competitive side kicks in and it pushes me to do more than I would on my own. The social interaction helps the time go by quicker and before I know it our training session or class is over.
DANIELLE: Working out with a friend helps motivate me to keep working hard at getting stronger and maintaining a (somewhat) healthy and fit lifestyle. I also enjoy it because our hour with Dennis is usually filled with friendly banter and makes the time go by faster. It also holds me accountable for actually showing up each week! It has become part of my weekly schedule for the last 5 years.
Q: How long have you been working out together?
CAROL: We’ve been working out together for about 5 years. It started when I convinced her to to do a half-marathon with me. We successfully completed it and haven’t done one since. Lol!
DANIELLE: The only thing I will add is training for the half marathon 5 years ago was probably the best thing I ever did to kick start my desire to get fit and stay fit.
Q: Why do you like working out at the Chatham Club?
CAROL: In all seriousness, I don’t love working out. I do it because I want to live longer and have many years to play golf! But I do look forward to going to The Chatham Club! All of your fitness needs are under one roof – personal trainers, great variety of classes, and various cardio and strength equipment – it has something for everyone. When I first joined I was afraid to take any of the classes. It was during one of the fun challenges that I took a class. Now I try and take at least 3 classes a week in addition to personal training. Don’t be afraid to try some of the classes in addition to the personal training.
DANIELLE: My husband and I joined the Chatham Club in May 2009. I came regularly but would NOT take any classes as I am about the most uncoordinated person you will ever meet. It wasn’t until after I ran the half marathon and started training with Dennis that I knew I needed to take different classes for cardio, strength training, etc. The Chatham Club offers so many great classes to get and keep you motivated to continue working out. I also realized that I didn’t have to be the most coordinated person to take the different classes. The instructors, trainers and “gym” friends that I have made make it easy to come (most days that is) and keep coming 4-5 times/week.
