People often ask: “What exactly is Pilates?”

Simply put, pilates focuses on the mind-body connection. While doing the various exercises, your mind and body should be constantly aware of your breathing.

Pilates is a form of exercise that emphasizes strengthening the core while toning and shaping the body’s muscles. Pilates is a mind-body discipline in which six principles create the foundation for effectively executing the exercises. They are as follows:

Concentration
Connecting the mind and body is imperative. Mindfulness and presence enable participants to focus on how the body embraces each movement. Followers will benefit by turning inward.

Control
The precision of alignment and execution assuredly renders participants reaping the benefits of Pilates. Flailing and jerky movements are never welcomed.

Centering
Joseph Pilates nominated the core as the “Powerhouse”; it is where all movement emanates.  Remove the arms, legs, and head; you have discovered the Powerhouse.  Recruitment of the deep muscles of the torso is the ticket.

Fluidity of Movement
Moving with smooth and steady grace is akin to the effortless effort. Making it look easy is the key.

Precision
The “Why” is the purpose. Countless reps and imprecision are not part of the repertoire. Execute exercises with meaning.

Breathing
Vitality is discovered by enforcing breathing coupled with movement. Inhale the energy; exhale anything negative. Breath is the foundation and is ALWAYS reviewed in each class before the first movement.

By connecting each of these tenets to your practice, the work of Pilates will become more fluid, meaningful, and efficient.  By the way, I always assign homework to TCC members, whether it be postural awareness, driving home with core exercises, or breathing while in the grocery line.

Be open-minded. Join the team upstairs in Studio A on Friday at 9am sharp. All levels are welcome.
